Please join me in welcoming the new I/I committee chair Dr. Elia Vázquez-Montilla. Many of our members have already had a chance to meet her in person at the ACEI conference in Chicago. Let's show some support for her in her new role. I also would like to thank Dr. Christine Chen and Dr. John P. Manning for the remarkable work done as a committee co-chairs for the last two years.
Dr. Vazquez-Montilla has been an ACEI member since 1992. She is a former Florida state branch president (2005-2008) (FACEI). During her tenure as the state president she was recipient of the ACEI Recognition for Service and of the Branch Award for Outstanding Branch Member Service. She also served at the ACEI Nomination Committee and has been a member of the ACEI the Presidents’ Council.
Dr. Vázquez-Montilla completed her B.A. at the University of Puerto Rico. She also completed her masters program (M. Ed.) in Education, Administration and Supervision at the University of Puerto Rico. In 1991, she received her Ph.D. from the University of florida with majors in elementary education and multicultural bilingual education. Dr Vázquez-Montilla has been working with linguistically and culturally diverse students and families in Florida since 1987. Research interests include teacher education, linguistically and culturally diverse families, and monitoring academic performance of English language learners.
Dr Vázquez-Montilla is a professor at the College of Education, Florida Gulf Coast University. One of her strongest contribution to the College of Education and FGCU has been her creation and implementation courses that lead to a complete program track for English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) endorsement courses for teachers. She has published numerous articles and has presented at state, national, and international professional conferences. Dr. Vázquez-Montilla provides service to the SW Florida surrounding school districts on ESOL issues and trends and willingly shares her expertise on ESOL issues with faculty and students.
